Isn’t it wonderful when a plant completely surprises you? That’s the feeling you get when you see a passionflower in bloom. What’s perhaps even more surprising is that this North American native passionflower is hardy to USDA zone 5 (really!) and it supports a huge array of wildlife. Its incredible blooms attract native bees, as well as hummingbirds and butterflies. Its foliage serves as a host for the caterpillars of several types of butterflies: gulf fritillaries, variegated fritillaries, banded hair-streak, red banded hair-streak, and the fabulous zebra swallowtail. If you are lucky and your plant sets fruit, that will attract birds and other animals. 

In warmer areas, this plant will need virtually no attention from you to turn into a vigorous vine covered in amazing multi-layered blooms. In zone 5 and 6, it will benefit from a somewhat protected spot (such as the base of a tree on which it can climb, or a thick layer of mulch) and needs well-drained soil.
