Between the intricate flowers and lush heart-shaped foliage, Dutchman’s pipe (or Aristolochia macrophylla) provides beauty and function in the landscape. Small plum-colored flowers bloom in the shape of a pipe (earning the name Dutchman’s pipe), but are usually hidden by the dense, overlapping leaves. The flowers boast an interesting fragrance that attracts flies and other bugs. It’s a fast-growing vine (growing up to 6 ft a year) that easily covers any eyesores and provides privacy.
Caution: every part of Dutchman’s Pipe is considered to be highly toxic to humans and animals (like pets). So, what makes it great for pollinators? The Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly is immune to the toxins, feeding exclusively on its leaves. The toxins are stored in the bodies of pipevine swallowtail caterpillars and adults, providing extra protection against predators!
